Starting a yoga practice can be a total game-changer for your physical and mental health. Thankfully, there is a wealth of yoga videos on YouTube to help anybody get started with a yoga practice.

While I prefer being in a local yoga studio and benefitting from the communal feel of being on the mat in class amongst others, my very first introduction to the practice was at home following along to yoga videos on YouTube.

Through my search for yoga videos on YouTube, I discovered the Yoga With Adriene YouTube channel.

Adriene’s laid-back demeanor and well-timed sense of self-deprecating humor immediately drew me to her content.

Beyond her casual a fun manner of communicating to viewers, she was also clearly a well-versed and compassionate practitioner of yoga.

In following along with Adriene’s videos, I had a sense I was being supported and cared for with Adriene’s gentle gems of wisdom or subtle reminders to practice self-love while she steadily prompted for the next pose.

Clearly, I am not alone in having gravitated towards Adriene’s style and approach as a yoga teacher as she has amassed a staggering 9+ million subscribers to her channel.

That is a highly impressive community that Adriene has worked hard to build through her warm and lighthearted approach to teaching yoga.

The Benefits Of Yoga

Yoga has changed my life. I make that statement wholeheartedly with no intention of being dramatic.

I can feel the positive benefits from my yoga practice lasting well beyond my time spent on the mat.

The benefits of yoga are numerous and documented scientifically. Some of those include:

  1. Reduction of Stress
  2. Anxiety Relief
  3. Reduction of Inflammation
  4. Reduction of Depression Symptoms

I have personally experienced quite a few of those benefits. My brain seems to be getting rewired to a calmer steady state that is less reactive to stressors.

I am also enjoying an increased sense of empathy for others and seem to be experiencing a grander connectedness to all.

The Mind-Body Connection

I have experienced, and I think science now documents, that the mind and body are inextricably linked. If you forego caring for one will eventually negate the other.

Yoga presents the perfect blend of proactive care for both.

The gentle reminding from instructors to breathe and stay present in addition to the strenuous activity create positive impacts that last well beyond the time spent on the yoga mat.

Yoga has allowed me to process stubborn emotional remnants from past rough patches of life that occurred over a decade ago.

While I had dealt with these issues at great length in talk therapy, there still seemed to remain some sort of physical embodiment of these past hardships.

Psychotherapy was an incredible tool for pulling me out and away from the crisis, but subtle reminders of these life challenges lingered somewhere in my core.

These remaining elements of my past could creep up from time to time in current situations, but it seems that yoga has now rendered them gone for good.

The challenging physical activity coupled with the focused mindset of yoga was able to reach those few remaining shards of my unprocessed angst and seemingly burn them all away.

Yoga And Mental Health

I have felt my mind getting rewired from yoga. I am less reactive personally and professionally. I feel myself becoming more connected with humanity.

It does not matter what kind of strain, stress, or troubles I walk onto the yoga mat with, as they all melt away during class.

I walk off the mat in pure bliss every time, almost akin to a mild, intoxicated state.

The leaves on the trees seem to shimmer with a bit more color and the sun’s rays seem to shine brighter.

That peaceful feeling and connectedness to everything around you are palpable after practicing yoga. There is a carryover effect throughout the day as well.

Yoga has been a gamer changer for my life. I am so thankful I took an action step and finally gave yoga a chance.
